Goodbye June: A Glance at Last Month

Hello! Long time, no talk to. It’s July first and I’m sitting in a new/old kitchen wondering where June went. It’s crazy how much can happen in one month. I barely even took pictures. Which in this world means it practically didn’t happen, lol. I decided today was a good day to stop and take a moment to review what happened last month.

Today I’ll be sharing:

My Post on Our Happy Medium

The phrase “Failure is Not an Option” is quoted from the 1995 film, Apollo 13. William Broyles Jr. is said to have come up with the line after interviewing Jerry Bostick – the Apollo 13 Flight Dynamics Officer. Consequently the quote has become a motivational phrase for NASA. Failure is Not an Option is a now a creed to live by. In the spirit of Jerry Bostwick, when things are not going well, calmly lay out all the options. Your failure is never one of them.

Failure is Not an Option

Our Happy Medium hosted a 30 Days of Homeschool series last month and my blog is featured! I was excited to be apart of this series where homeschool moms tell it like it is. We shared the beautiful mess that is homeschool. My article is about Emmett’s themed astronaut homeschool and how Failure is Not an Option. If you are into space movies, you probably recognize that phrase. I shared how we apply this astronaut creed and lifestyle in our homeschool, and how you can too. Read the feature here.

Finishing Up Homeschool in June

We homeschool all year round. Some parents looking at me like I’m crazy and say “kids need a summer break!” I agree kids need a break. The truth is, Emmett and I travel and take breaks a lot! My family loves to go on spontaneous vacations year round. Trying to shove learning in the standard 9 months doesn’t make sense for us. Instead I schedule what needs to be done for 4 days per week. Then the rest of our learning is as spontaneous as our adventures. Every question has the potential to become a new project or learning opportunity. Even on the Disney cruise Emmett takes the opportunity to learn awesome new things. Homeschool and vacation go hand in hand for our family. Still, we had to finish up this year. Here is why…

June Digital Homeschool Portfolio

We moved again. And since we are out of state, I have to submit Emmett’s evaluation 3 months before his commencement date. So we are working on his homeschool portfolio every day adding assignment and project samples. Thankfully I already have an evaluator ready to review it when we are done.

Remember how I just said we love to go on spontaneous vacations and homeschool year-round… Well this coming school year Emmett may be trying a year of public school. We are still talking about it. It’ll be a huge adjustment if we do. No more spontaneous week long expeditions. But a year of public school would be its own adventure. I’ll post an update when we know for sure.

Moving into Our New House

What better reason to go off grid for the month of June than relocating? Our Florida house is still home. However, we have also moved north into another house closer to work. Moving into this house has been wild. When we got here the whole house smelled like smoke while the garage and bathrooms smelled like pet pee. The wood floors were flooded at some point leaving them warped and gross. Thankfully my family renovates for a living. With some help from our cousin, we quickly painted most of the walls (which helped with the smoke smell), unloaded the truck, and are now renovating the bathrooms. The first bathroom is done. Today, we tore out the master bathroom. When the bathrooms are done will we replace the swollen stinky wood flooring. I’ll be posting progress photos occasionally on Instagram.

My Top Secret Design Job

Okay. You caught me. It’s not really top secret. But it is exciting! What do I always need more of? Creative work!

Finishing off June on a high note, I was asked last week to start making social media images for an awesome author. Since this author has not shared anything about this new adventure I will wait to say anything particular. This new assignment is a great way to practice my photoshop skills. I’ve already made a batch of images for the author’s marketing strategist to use. I can’t wait to see them in use. Because of this new job, I’m also working on uping my graphic design portfolio. You can checkout some of my projects here.

What did you and your family do this June?
